Cricut HTV for Beginners: Make Your First Iron-On T-Shirt

By Crafts editorial team · Updated

To make an HTV shirt: size the design, mirror it, load the vinyl shiny side down, cut, weed, then press with firm heat for the time on the label. That is the whole process. The rest of this guide covers the details that decide whether the design stays on through the wash.

Step 1: Size the design from the shirt

Wrong size is the number one beginner mistake. Use these starting points and adjust to your blank.

ItemDesign widthPlacement
Adult T-shirt (S–XL)9–12 in2–3 in below the collar, centered
Adult pocket spot3–4 inLeft chest
Kids T-shirt6–8 in1.5–2 in below the collar
Baby onesie4–5 inCentered on the chest
Tote bag8–10 inCentered, 3 in below the top

Lock the aspect ratio before you change the size so the design does not stretch.

Step 2: Mirror and cut

  1. Turn Mirror on in the Make screen. HTV is cut upside down, and a design that is not mirrored will read backwards.
  2. Load the vinyl shiny carrier side down on the mat.
  3. Choose the iron-on material setting.
  4. Cut a small test shape first. If the blade tears the carrier, lower the pressure. If it does not cut through the vinyl, raise it one step.

Step 3: Weed

Weeding means peeling away every part that is not the design. Use a hook to pick out the centers of letters like A, O and R. Work in good light and keep the carrier flat.

Step 4: Pre-press and position

Press the shirt for about five seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. Fold it to find the center line, and place the design so it sits 2–3 inches under the collar. A pencil mark at the collar and the center makes a shirt look professional.

Step 5: Press

  1. Cover the design with parchment or a pressing cloth.
  2. Press with firm pressure for the time and temperature on your vinyl's label. For an iron, turn off steam and press in sections instead of sliding.
  3. Peel the carrier warm or cold, as the label says. If an edge lifts, cover and press again for a few more seconds.
  4. Wait about 24 hours before the first wash. Wash inside out in cold water and hang dry or tumble low.

Where the designs come from

CutNest Design Library gives you SVG cut files in 60 categories, each with a DXF version, plus a web app where you can preview the real file before you download it. It also includes a project guide called HTV on T-Shirts, with the sizing table, placement, a step-by-step press and care notes, and a separate guide for layered vinyl. Frequently asked questions

Which side of HTV goes down on the mat?

The shiny carrier side goes down on the mat. The dull side, which is the adhesive, faces up and gets cut.

Can I use an iron for heat transfer vinyl?

Yes. A household iron works if you use firm pressure, no steam, and the temperature and time on your vinyl's label. A heat press gives more even results, but an iron is enough for a first shirt.

What blade do you use to cut iron-on vinyl with a Cricut?

The standard fine-point blade works for most iron-on vinyl. Choose the iron-on setting for your machine and do a test cut first.

Do I need to mirror HTV?

Yes. HTV is cut from the back, so the design must be mirrored before cutting or the text will come out backwards on the shirt.
